Steam Cooler Research

At the end of 2017, we began conducting research to increase the efficiency of current types of steam coolers in connection with the more tight requirements for reducing temperature of reduced sealing steam, especially by turbine manufacturers. In this project, we investigated the effect of condensate temperature, which serves to cool the sealing steam, and the output of this was the ring design of steam coolers that was implemented into the company’s production program. The research activity was carried out with the support of the European Regional Development Fund, from the Operational Program Enterprise and Innovation for Competitiveness (project registration number: CZ.01.1.02/0.0/0.0/16_045/0010777 – Steam Cooling Research).

Following this successful research project, we decided to continue the development of steam coolers in 2018, this time focusing on increasing the inner diameter of spray nozzle openings while maintaining the existing amount of coolant and preventing its clogging with preservatives that protect the components of turbines, thus not reducing the cooling efficiency. Atomizing steam is used for better mixing of the cooling medium and cooled steam. This new type of steam cooler was first repeatedly tested in our testing laboratory by simulating real conditions, and in 2019, its deliveries to our customers started. This project was also co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, Operational Program Enterprise and Innovation for Competitiveness, under the registration number CZ.01.1.02/0.0/0.0/17_205/0013266 – Steam Cooling with Atomizing Steam).

The new design allows perfect mixing of the coolant with cooled steam even with a small flow.  Thanks to the perfect mixing, the steam cooler is shorter and no condensate appears behind the steam cooler.

For the end customer, this steam cooler with the SA designation brings several clear advantages, namely:

  • perfect mixing of refrigerant and cooled steam,
  • there is no residual condensate in the cooled steam,
  • shorter length necessary for steam cooling,
  • reduced temperature to which the steam can be cooled,
  • achieving precise parameters of the cooled medium,
  • favourable price.
